Fernandez Ranch Loop – 6 miles, 835ft Elevation
January 7 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
Come and hike a great loop around Fernandez Ranch and into EBMUD property for some fresh air, views and cows. Starting from the bridge, we will turn left onto Black Phoebe trail, then take Whipsnake up the ridge for our first views. After the lovely and shady Woodrat trail, we will cross over into EBMUD territory and walk the ridge. A short snack and water break at a bench, then we take the shady Canyon trail, down Woodland Trail and Windmill back to the bridge and cars. This hike has equal parts sun and shade. Typical to see in this area are cows (it is still a working ranch), lizards, hawks, coyotes and deer.
No parking fees, but spots are limited, so carpool if you can.
The road in is small and not well maintained, so take it slow.
Hike will depart promptly 5 minutes after Meet-Up time.
What to bring:
1-2 liters water
long pants – ticks have been spotted here
The trails are nice, but this time of year have a lot of fallen leaves mixed with rain, so that makes them very slippery and muddy in the valleys.
From the 80 freeway, take the 4 Eastbound, and exit after the Franklin Canyon golf course. On Christie Road, it’s about 1 mile in and the parking is on the right. You will see a sign.
From the 680 Freeway, take the 4 Westbound, and exit Franklin Canyon. Cross under the freeway, and get back on the 4 going Eastbound for .5 miles, just past the golf course and exit Christie Road. .9 miles to the parking lot which will be on your right.
